E3 2009: Microsoft confirms sequel to 2007's open-world actioner; promises co-op and competitive game play.

LOS ANGELES--Amongst the wealth of hardware and software announcements unveiled at this morning's Microsoft press conference, one game was confirmed with very little fanfare--a sequel to the superhero open-world game Crackdown, which first debuted on the Xbox 360 in 2007.

Few details were released about Crackdown 2, but Microsoft has confirmed that Ruffian Games will be the developers and has also promised that the game will "take multiplayer gaming to unprecedented levels for the ultimate cooperative and competitive multiplayer experience, providing you and your friends with the freedom to explore, destroy, and play as you return to restore justice and peace to Pacific City." The first game also featured co-op play throughout the entire story campaign.

At this stage, no firm release date has been set for Crackdown 2. For more from the show, check out GameSpot's complete coverage of E3 2009.

Randolph Ramsay loves games in the same way monkeys love bananas. Sure, they can live without it, but what's the point? He also loves fighting games, but never plays online in case people notice just how bad he is at them.

This game is somewhat irrelevant since APB is coming out, and is made by the same people. APB is going to be huge, so most of their dev team will be working on it instead of CD2. APB shares the basic theme of crackdown, minus the superhumans. With the dissapointing reception it recieved before, I doubt many people will notice the game.

Crackdown received a decent score in reviews which was weird because it was such a memorable game. I look foward to Crack2 in the hopes for stronger villains (maybe ones with superpowers of the own) and more length to storyline. Hopefully Crack2 will improve on its predecessor and show what sandbox gameplay is all about!

With you there on certain aspects, playing co-op to hit up the stunts, agility orbs and hidden orbs was sooooo much more fun than GTA4's equivalents, even though I was psyched for Halo 3 beta, I think i only ended up playing about 2 rounds of it because of the awesomeness of the first game. Here's hoping we get another demo

What if we could destroy entire buildings?!? I can't wait. I thought Crackdown was more fun than GTAIV (holds up flame shield), but hey that's just me.

Sweet. Crackdown is still one of my favorite 360 games. Hopefully 2 just improves on the original.
