E3 2011

Fallout: New Vegas irradiating October

E3 2010: Obsidian's semi-sequel to Bethesda's hit RPG Fallout 3 ships October 19 in North America, October 22 in Europe; new trailer inside.

Although last night's premiere of the Kinect motion-sensing system is hogging the majority of headlines, another development of import for gamers occurred early Monday. Bethesda Softworks has dated Fallout: New Vegas. The semi-sequel to the hit 2008 role-playing game Fallout 3 will ship October 19 in North America, with a European release to follow on October 22. The game will be released on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Developed by many veterans of the original Fallout games at Obsidian Entertainment, New Vegas is set in the Mojave Wasteland and casts players in the role of a courier who gets shot in the head over a package and is left for dead. After recovering, players will be free to roam the desert, exploring new areas, modifying weapons, and getting wrapped up in the larger conflict between the New California Republic and the slave-trading Caesar's Legion.

In apparent conjunction with the release date announcement, Bethesda released a new trailer for Fallout: New Vegas, viewable below. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage, and stay tuned for a fresh look at the postnuclear RPG later this week, straight from the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

@pogswarts, I just watched the video here http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/falloutnewvegas/video/6266700 in the last few minutes of the video, they talked about FO:NV and there is a tie in to FO 3, as stated in the video FO:NV is set 4 years after FO 3. But that leads to the idea of what happened in the 4 years between the two story lines, as there is this tie in, that leaves a bit of a gap no? And what will the next FO bring? As stated in the video with the 4 year gap yet they are tied in to each other. Now that I think of it, this sounds like they took an idea from Crysis & Crysis Warhead, where you played two different characters of the same game & yet they're both standalone games. IMHO it would have been nice to see a continuation of FO 3 & be able to travel past the DC wasteland, well for the most part to be able to explore more of everything between the east & west coast, like they did with point lookout, Zeta, pitt & Anchorage. Well that's wishful thinking to be able to travel the US but unrealistic as that would be one massive game.

Bought f3 goty to get ready for this game. I can't wait! Too bad I won't be able to play it until Feb 2011! But I'll be able to see if it lives up to the hype and the Fallout name.

Since were talking about a sequel to THE rpg dungeon crawler looter shooter of the year, I might as well shoot down that other game that calls it self the best..... Borderlands. People have done nothing but prasie that game, so warning borderlands fanboys this will offend: Borderlands does not even reach half the scale Fo3. Fallout 3 was the best game of it's kind ever, and no one can best them at it because it's it's own genre. Borderlands ripped off the horrible control scheme from Call of Duty. I am saying the truth when I say that the only way that Borderlands suprised me was combination of avarage shooter gameplay, with even more avarage dungeon crawler gameplay, and the DLC for it didn't impress me either. All in all, it earned a hardcore "nothing special" from me. Fallout New Vegas will kill borderlands 2.

@pogswarts, I sure hope so & that your right, don't get me wrong here It's not that I'm knocking Obsidian. But I have seen in the past how things end not being as good as hoped to be when a title is Expanded to much. But I must say that so far it's looking good & I hope they keep the option open for the PC versions to have use of the GECK.

@ Dremun I think that there will be a few tie-ins or at least some reference to characters from FO1 & 2 (maybe 3). The Brother Hood of Steel will most likely come into play since they have been in every FO game yet and they have bases on the west coast too. Anyway, this will be a great game mainly due to the fact that Obsidian is doing it .

All the videos on gamespot.com only load to a little more than 3/4 (always to the same percentage) and never load fully. Anyone else experiencing this problem? I'm using Firefox and this happens on both, Windows XP and Linux.

I'm a huge Fallout fan and I have to say the trailer looks amazing. But I have one concern, and I feel the engine seems to be showing it's age. That's the one improvement I was hoping for, better graphics. It looks like they've improved the combat, which is great, aiming down the weapon is a must! Wish they were getting rid of vats or made it a perk towards the higher levelling up, hated that, took all the scarier elements away as you can just button bash the vats! Despite all this, I canne wait!

Wow... that EyeBot came ALL the way from the Capital Wasteland. If you look closely at the at one of the stickers it reads, "MY CHILD IS AM HONOR STUDENT -ROOSEVELT ACADEMY-" Little bugger came a LONG way to do something. Possibly deliver a message about a certain situation, perhaps? Just a possibility. Ha-ha

    @ Dav_id83 err, what?
I had F3 from the day it was launched, and rarely encountered any bugs, as a matter of fact, theres only one bug that comes to mind, which was hardly noticable anyway...

and as for the expansions, im pretty sure they didnt release expansions immediately after releasing the game.

F3 was a great game, this will be too!

I wish they had more time to develop a new engine and art style. It resembles a fallout 3 mod, but I'm still going to get the game.

@dakan45 Okay, let's get this clear:

    1. All the CORE members of Black Isle [writers, lead designers, even one of the lead art directors and so on ARE Obsidian. 2. Sure the demands of the era have changed, that's clear; yet, companies like Bioware developed some of the greatest RPG's of all time [they worked alongside Black Isle a lot] in the 90's, and even now - they have evolved and still create great RPG's, just as Obsidian can, and have [Neverwinter Nights 2 was a valiant effort].

    3. "Osbidian", are we looking at the same company here? Or is that some remote rural based software company somewhere else? OBSIDIAN is the name.

    4. Treyarch did NOT develop a horde of genius games back in the 90's. And Raven? Did you forget about their memorable Jedi Knigth games in the early-mid 2000's - or that Singularity is actually looking decent?

You may hold to your clouded view, but the truth is, Obsidian Entertainment are a force to be reckoned with.
