Silent Hill 8 frightens Xbox 360, PS3 in 2011

By Eddie Makuch

E3 2010: Konami's latest horror installment due out next year for Microsofts and Sony's home consoles.

LOS ANGELES--Today at Konami's press briefing, on top of announcing a Glee singing title and Neverdead, the publisher announced the next installment in the frightening Silent Hill series. According to series producers Devin Shatsky and Brian Gomez, Silent Hill 8 (working title) will make its way to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 next year.

A trailer for the game was shown, painting a series-familiar setting of gloom. In the trailer, the camera panned over a rain-soaked road, coming to rest as an inmate transport vehicle sped past.

Gamers will play as ex-inmate Murphy Pendleton, a man who suffers from lucid visions when he sleeps. In the trailer, Pendleton is seen running through the forest in his jumpsuit, crossing a ravine by tiptoeing along a log, finally finding his way to Silent Hill.

Next, the player enters a building and proceeds down a hallway that begins to disintegrate, revealing that the corridor is actually a metal cage suspended in a creepy sewerlike area. After this scene, Pendleton wakes up, still on the bus.

Silent Hill 8 will remain a third-person horror game in which players will be tested by puzzles, creatures, and various otherworldly beings. Konami did not specify a release date more exact than 2011.

In April at its Gamers Day event, Konami strongly hinted at a Silent Hill announcement for this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. A trailer for the game ended with the tagline "The Silence Ends," and a definite reference to this year's show.

Outside of a well-received remake of the original, the Silent Hill series has been dormant since 2008's Double Helix-developed Silent Hill: Homecoming.

I saw the trailer and it looks pretty interesting, especially with the fog going through the light effects. Of course graphics are not what can save a game. I hope the story will be as strong as the first three games. I played silent hill 4 back in 2009,and I hated it to be quite frank, after that I have not bought a silent hill game since. Silent Hill 3 is not only my fav. SH game, but my Fav. game of all time..till now nothing has topped it for me. I'm glad the Konami is a bit more hands on with it from being too westernized. I will miss Akira though..that man was God with his music to these games .

Really hoping that this will remain true to the original 4 games. I was somewhat dissapointed with the more recent ones. It's like the newer ones lost a lot of the psychological horror part of it and went more for trying to make you jump and it doesn't quite work kind of way.
I also think it should technically be number 6. Since Origins and Shattered Memories were more of spin offs from the main series. Homecoming was considered number 5 too since it was one of the main games.

I guess Origins was 5, Homecoming was 6, and Shattered Memories was 7. So it kinda does make sense that this is 8.

I am an addict to the series. I played them all before, but sadly sold them a few years back. I bought all of them a few weeks ago and can't stop playing them! I'm on the 5th one now!

I think Silent Hill 2 is one of the best horror games out there. Homecoming was decent, but I hope and pray
that they take their time making this game. I hope to God that they have a tallented team working on this game. I really like this series, but it has kinda gone down hill after Silent Hill 3.............Lets keep our fingers crossed.

I have a feeling the silent hill 8 is just an early name for it because its early in development and they haven't thought of the actual name for it. It will most likely change in the near future. Just my opinion though.

    Silent Hill 1-2-3-4-Origins-Homecoming-Shattered Memories

    @summonsoul
For the story of Silent Hill. The story of the episodes are not in chronologycal order. Every story tells something new about the mistery that is inside Silent Hill. Sure there are references trough the series, but if you wants to know everything about the story, you have to play all of them. Play trough order is not important.

And about the new game. Konami just have to respawn the Silent Team and give the project back to them. Everything will be sweet! Silent Hill 4 was weak and they have take it away from them? Homecoming wasn't better nor Origins.

I'm going to wait for the reviews on this one. Homecoming was very disappointing and I didn't wait for the reviews because I made the mistake of assuming it would be non generic freakiness due to the brand name (and I was wrong). I hope this game can match the creative scares and atmospheres of the original. Homecoming seemed like an RE clone more than anything else.
