Ice-T chilling Gears of War 3

By Eddie Makuch

E3 2010: Law & Order star joins Drake as second musician to voice a character in Epic Games' final chapter of the Gears trilogy.

LOS ANGELES--Microsoft today announced that Law & Order star and famed hip-hop artist Ice-T is joining the voice cast of Gears of War 3. In Gears of War 3, Ice-T will play a character named Griffin, a leader of a group of human survivors known as the Stranded. This "rag-tag" group will meet up with Marcus Fenix (John Dimaggio), and the rest of Delta Squad sometime during the game's narrative.

Also on board is Grammy Award-nominated rapper Drake, who will voice Jace Stratton in the game. Stratton appeared briefly in Gears of War 2, and in that game, he was voiced by prolific video game voice actor Nolan North.

Cliff Bleszinski, creative director at Gears of War development house Epic Games, broke the news last night at a Microsoft event, where Ice-T was seen proclaiming his role in the game. A tweet from Bleszinski last night read "The hotness. Ice won't stop telling everyone about his role as Griffin in Gears 3."

Ice-T, born Tracy Marrow, is no stranger to video game voice work. His distinctive baritone has appeared in a handful of games, including Scarface: The World is Yours, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Sanity: Aiken's Artifact, and Def Jam Fight for New York, where he played himself.

Gears of War 3 is the final chapter in the current trilogy and arrives in April 2011 exclusively on the Xbox 360.

    Wow, I didn't know Drake had so many haters.

    I mean both him and Ice T have ACTED before ( most don't realize Drake was on Degrassi) so doing voice overs won't be something entirely new. Can't wait, and if I understand correctly, atleast Drake's character will be playable.

    I love the fact that a guy like IceT is excited about voice acting in a video game. The nerds are taking over B****** and IceT has joined the ranks.

    Ice-T has a very distinctive voice that makes him a great choice for a gritty, hard-edged series like Gears of War. The fact that he was a rapper turned actor is almost irrelevant...he just has a good vocal tone.

    Guys like him, Patrick Warburton, or Kevin Michael Richardson (who recently narrated the E3 trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic) have distinctive voices that will always be called upon whenever particular styles are needed. You can't hate on that.

    Thank God. Before I buy a game, I like to make sure it has at least one ice-related rapper-turned-actor.

    I'm don't listen to much of them but wow, people here are throwing a fit because they are VOICE ACTING. Just because you are a rapper doesn't mean you aren't allowed to be a voice actor for a video game. >_>

    @Cherub_Rock

    I doubt it, but you might hear some old Ice-T music in the background of one of the new characters' scenes or something like that. Or a reference here or there by one of the characters. I think it'll be something that's kind of out of the way like that.

    Personaly I don't really care for rap but i think these guys could pull it of as the voices for 2 of the new characters in this game
