Nintendo reveals black Wii, red DSi

Matching Wii Remote and Classic Controller Pro also appear in Japan, where Nintendo's portable is also getting a new shade.

When Nintendo first announced its contribution to next-generation gaming back at E3 2005, the press shots for the console, then still known as the "Revolution," showed it in a variety of colours including red, green, and black. Since then the Wii has gone on to be the most popular console this generation, selling more than 50 million units and inspiring both Sony and Microsoft to implement some motion controls of their own.

Since launch, however, the console has been available only in white, with the multiple colours from the initial press shots failing to materialise. Today Nintendo has announced that the Wii will now be available in black in Japan. Accompanying the black Wii is a matching black Wii Remote and an equally glossy black Classic Controller Pro, which will also be available in white. The black Wii console's price remains the same as its white counterpart, at ¥25,000 (£158, $258), while the Classic Controller Pro weighs in at ¥2,000 (£12.64, $20.74).

Nintendo also let loose a new DSi colour on Japan. The DSi will now be available in red, alongside the current pink, lime green, and metallic blue, which previously launched on March 20. Pricing for the new red model remains the same as other models at ¥18,000 (£114, $186). Currently the DSi is available only in white and black in Europe and in bright blue and black in the US.

The red DSi is set for release in Japan on July 11, with the black Wii launching a little later on August 1. When contacted about a European release, Nintendo UK simply said, "There are no current plans for Europe."

    wat the heck nintendo why different colors for different areas...did you ever think that i, an american, would like the black wii or the red DSi??? well guess wat nintedo i would like them but i cant buy them. Shame...

    Dude, black wii looks pimpin! I am not buying another wii just to get a black one, but I will certainly get a black wii remote.

    thanks you jerks, i didn't want a white wii, so i waited, finally gave up becasue because all my friends were playing SSB without me, so i picked one up and 6 months later you announce a black one. you guys are really something...too bad your losing momentum because there is only a game worth playing on the wii every six months and it loses its steam after a month because it like number 20 in a sequel...i dont even care if teh new zelda dispenses real money after you win...its old, natal and the new eyetoy software is going to put this system on the same path as the gamecube...

    am i bitter about it? maybe.....but the fact is the wii was nothing more than gimmick..

    Many people I know bought the Elite because of the 120gb HD and a HDMI port, in addition to the black case.

    I might get two of the new classic controllers, since I don't have any yet. Two new black Wiimote-Nunchucks too, since I've only got two atm.

    I personally want those see-through fun colors the N64 had. Those where great!

    Frankly, I agree with star77241.
    I'm not going to fork out another 200 pounds or so just for a different colour!
    I know one of the only reasons people got the xbox Elite was cos it was black- but it really doesn't matter.
    A black Wiimote + Nunchuck sounds sexy though.

    I'd get the controller but not the Wii. All the colored skins they've had for the Wiimotes are freaking ugly but if they made the Wiimotes in those colors, I would buy those. They should just release new colored Wiimotes not Wiis.

    Who really cares about the colour? Sure, they look nice, but i've already got a wii and I'm not planning on getting a dsi! And it's not even on sale in Australia yet, and they've got no plans for it to be!

    I already sold my DSI because it was boring im not going to buy another one just because it's in Red.
