Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword swinging in 2011

E3 2010: Nintendo kicks off press conference by firming up release window for Link's second new action adventure on the Wii.

LOS ANGELES--At the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo did not much more than tease that the Wii would be getting a second installment in the Legend of Zelda franchise. This year, though, the publisher led its E3 press conference with the first public demo for Link's newest action adventure, in the process definitively announcing Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will arrive in 2011.

Nintendo's live demo of Skyward Sword was offered by none other than franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Joined by Nintendo marketing executive Bill Trinen onstage, Miyamoto showed how the new Zelda will integrate with the Wii's motion-sensing scheme, with the Wii Remote doubling as a sword and the nunchuk serving as a shield. Foes confronted and vanquished during the demo included carnivorous plants, disembodied eyeballs, and orcish creatures.

Beyond Link's hallmark sword and board, Miyamoto also showed off a number of other weapons in Link's arsenal, including a slingshot, bow and arrow, bomb, and whip. Of the whip, players have precise control over its direction, thanks in part to the game's integration with the Wii's precision-enhancing MotionPlus add-on.

The demo also introduced the beetle, which flies off Link's wrist like a falcon, and players have a limited time to guide it around the level, scouting areas or picking up items.

Before ending his demo, Miyamoto noted that Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be available for play on the E3 show floor. As such, stay tuned to GameSpot for a more in-depth look at the game.

Zelda, Donkey Kong, Goldeneye, Metroid, and the 3DS with Ocarina of time and Starfox... wow. They went all crazy with the games this year.

You'll find Zelda is an RPG/action game at the end of the day. Comparing it to other better action RPGs like Mass Effect, Deus X, Fallout etc. it is not as great any more by comparison to them. I've been a loyal fan since the NES however the company making a poor console with a drought of quality games and not trying to keep their games fresh by re-inventing instead of churning out the same stuff has lead me to look else where for better games. I've felt since N64 Ocarina of Time the Zelda franchise hasn't equaled it but has instead has stagnated to the point where I am left in disappointment playing it especially Twilight Princess which in my view ended on a whimper as opposed to a bang like Ocarina of Time. The series stagnates because nothing really new or daring is seriously tried let alone attempted by Nintendo and with this approach I get bored and disappointed with games that stick to the same old formula which frankly in my opinion make things repetitive and boring not making me as a gamer feel I get my moneys worth from it.

i'm sure the people at Nintendo are wishing they had the tech from the PS move.

One thing that annoyed me about the zelda games after Orcania of time i.e Wind waker and Twilight Princess was that there were less items available to select in the game with out having to pause first. To avoid excessive pausing and switching items nintendo pretty much made it so you would only need to use two items per dungeon. This made the puzzles easier which was not a step in the right direction in my opinion.

i love the graphics. i was scared when they said they were using the engine for twilight princess because thats the best it would look. windwaker STILL looks good. i think all the wii games should do some sort of graphical twist, because theres no way they are gonna compete technology wise. they kill with charm, uniqueness, thinking outside the box, etc. if ur machine isnt on equal playing fields, u have to be creative. i think nintendo had a great show (i missed part of sonys bc GS feed froze up, but nintendo had the best show imho from all ive seen). sucks itll be ANOTHER year till zelda tho.

The twilight and Wind waker mixed art style looks intersting. Anyone else notice though that in every shot Link has the Master Sword? Either all those shots take place after he gets the master sword or this might play different from most other Zelda games.

I saw them demoing it and was less than impressed, they blamed it on "interference" but the game was clunky and was far from 1 to 1 control

So pretty much the same as any other Zelda game? I love the L.O.Z. series,Link To The Past got me into gaming. I just hate how the latest Zelda games really offer nothing new in gameplay and feature the same weapons over and over. I honestly dont care how good reviews will be for this game, I wont buy it. I was so disapointed with Twilight Princess,I thought it was crap.

Zelda games now-a-days are really a spit in the face to what Zelda use to mean and imo: There hasnt been a good Zelda game since Ocarina Of Time,After that all the games seem to be the same thing just in different settings and a tweek in graphics.

@rb7_brady nah, i've been able to adapt to play games one handed since my first console. (the n64) All i need is a stub to move the stick, which I got, and my fingers on the other hand for the buttons.

It's only been the Wii so far that I absolutely cannot play, and that makes me sad, since I've loved Zelda since I first started playing on the n64

Any other Zelda purists out there concerned over Link's apparent right handedness (in the game AND concept art)? As a lefty I'm also concerned that there may not be a left handed control configuration (i.e. Punch Out), I'm not exactly that coordinated with my right hand.
