E3 2011: Battlefield 3 firing up October 25

Swedish developer DICE bringing latest shooter series entry out this fall after three years of development; beta starts this September.

LOS ANGELES--The core Battlefield series has been dormant since 2005's well-reviewed PC-exclusive Battlefield 2. Now, after years of development, Battlefield 3 finally has a release date.

Battlefield 3 will ship for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 25. In addition to the standard version of the game, Battlefield 3 will be available in a special edition, which includes the Back to Karkand expansion, an add-on with updated Battlefield 2 multiplayer maps.

On top of nailing down a release date for Battlefield 3, EA noted that the multiplatform multiplayer beta for the game will commence in September. Currently, the only way to enlist in the beta is to have purchased a copy of the Medal of Honor Limited Edition. However, DICE said during the Electronic Arts media briefing that the beta would be "open," though it did not offer any other information on how gamers can enlist.

As for the game, Battlefield 3--which EA says has been in development for three years-- will sport both a single-player campaign and an online component, which can be played with up to 64 players (for the PC version only). Battlefield 3 will support co-op play for its campaign and will let gamers pilot jets, among other vehicles. Additionally, Battlefield 3 will run on DICE's updated Frostbite 2 engine.

Hey.. that Medal of Honor LE is the same that includes the Frontline? If so, how do we do to enter the beta? Because I didn't find anything into the package...

Why havent you played Bad Company 2 since then? So cheap and great graphics especially on 64-bit and its what you can do in the game also! Bet I still wont play to rank 50 on Bad Company 2 and BF3 will be out. I am rank 34 or something but unlocked everything at rank 26. Wonder how many people will still play BC2 after BF3 is released. Bet we see people approaching top rank within the first 2 days on BF3 out like it was in BC2 on the first day it was out! Dont know how they ranked up so crazy rapid. I doubt Battlefield 3 will drop so rapid in price like Bad Company 2 did but then again I could be wrong... it is an EA release afterall. I just hope they fund Dice well as they are a great software engine maker.

Some Gamestop employees know nothing. I asked a Gamestop employee recently when BF3 was supposed to come out and he was like "Oh. It's coming out next year. 2012." Pfft.

I appreciate the fact that they're already preparing launch day add-ons for a game due out in 5 months.

It makes me feel really valued as a customer to know that the company wants to go that extra mile to ensure I get the most out of my purchase, by making me pay extra if I want to wait for reviews. That unless I blindly pre-order the game, I'll get the opportunity to buy content that was ready but was not included in the non-pre-order box.

If only they were able to go a little further and send company representatives out to all the customers who didn't pre-order through their online store, to personally show their appreciation by providing a free knee to the groin.

Perhaps one day they'll achieve that level of customer relations.

This game will rule. Infinity Ward better start worrying about their franchise because this game will certainly destroy any modern war shooter in the market now.
